- In detail
The Alereon AL5635 Ultra Wideband (UWB) Wireless Ethernet Bridge Kit is an evaluation platform that supports a secure, high throughput wireless connection utilizing IP protocols over UWB radio technology. By avoiding the crowded 2.4 and 5GHz unlicensed frequency bands used by a multitude of wireless technologies, the AL5635 which operates in up to 30 discrete channels in the 3.1 to 4.8GHz and 6.3 to 9GHz frequency ranges avoids both interference and channel capacity issues inherent in WiFi and Bluetooth.
High Throughput and Quality of Service
Free from the congested WiFi and Bluetooth frequency bands, the AL5635 Ethernet bridge kit provides wireless throughput rates comparable to wired 10/100 Ethernet speeds. Dedicated, low latency UWB wireless links provide a higher level of Quality of Service (QoS) than found in other common wireless technologies. If security is a concern, the AL5635 uses AES128 bit encryption algorithms to encrypt data being sent over the air. UWB's high frequency, short-range OFDM wireless transmissions are resistant to jamming by other wireless technologies or RF noise while providing a low possibility of detection and low probability of interception. These advantages make the AL5635 using UWB technology the perfect choice for use in high density environments including apartments or office building and noisy industrial environments such as manufacturing or processing plants.
Modes of Operation
The AL5635 Ethernet Bridge Kit consists of two UWB adapters that terminate in RJ-45 Ethernet jacks making connections to either Ethernet ports or wall jacks a snap. In addition, Alereon's driverless Ethernet bridge firmware allows connectivity to any type of host device making the solution truly Operating System (OS) independent.
The basic mode of operation (default mode) is a simple point-to-point Ethernet cable replacement. Simply replace the CAT-5 Ethernet cable in your set-up with the UWB adapters included in the AL5635 kit. Power-up the radios and they instantly wireless connect and operate straight out-of-the-box.
In addition to an Ethernet cable replacement, the AL5635 has a second mode of operation as an Adhoc mesh network. This configuration will allow multiple adapters to connect in an Adhoc network. If one of the adapters is connected to an internet connection it will act as an Access Point (AP) and enable internet access to all other adapter nodes that have joined the Adhoc network. Support for mesh mode is configurable allowing a node on the network to hop through one or more other nodes to communicate with a distant node or access point.
A Windows based configuration tool is used to configure the Ethernet bridge to either mode of operation. The tool also allows the user to set the node name, network name, password (if so desired). NOTE: Out-of-the-box the adapters are configured in the point-to-point cable replacement default mode and do not require use of the configuration tool.
